Body Scanners Can and Do Store Images

Just this week the U.S. Marshals admitted to saving tens of thousands of images recorded at the security checkpoint of a single Florida courthouse.
An associate general counsel with the Marshals Service acknowledged that they had saved more than 35,000 images from the Orlando, Fla. federal courthouse.
According to CNET, body scanners are able to penetrate clothing to provide a highly detailed image of one's anatomy, including the good and the bad.
The U.S. government likes the scanners because they are able to detect concealed weapons better than other methods.
On the other hand, the Electronic Privacy Information Center and its executive director Marc Rotenberg told CNET that these "devices are designed and deployed in a way that allows the images to be routinely stored and recorded, which is exactly what the Marshal Service is doing. We think it's significant."
EPIC has filed a lawsuit asking that a federal judge pull the plug on the TSA's body scanning program, says CNET.
"TSA is not being straightforward with the public about the capabilities of these devices," Rotenberg told CNET. "This is the Department of Homeland Security subjecting every U.S. traveler to an intrusive search that can be recorded without any suspicion--I think it's outrageous."
A TSA agent maintains that the recording function is turned off and that they are "not ever activating those capabilities at the airport."
Still, the debate over how much loss of privacy is too much seems likely to intensify, as the deployment of the millimeter wave body scanners is poised to take off.

Body Scanners are Invasive, Stop TSA!!

Talk about a violation of privacy!!  Boycott Flying!!

Body Scanners are Invasive

Do you want a picture of yourself being viewed by a stranger and potentially shared with a database??  When do the body cavity searches begin?  I think I'll Drive!!

Body Scanners are Invasive, Pat Downs are Humiliating!

"Annoyance at security hassles has been on the rise among airline crews and passengers for years, but the widespread use of full-body image detectors this year and the simultaneous introduction of more intrusive pat-downs seems to have ramped up the frustration.
As passengers have simmered over being forced to choose scans by full-body image detectors or rigorous pat-downs inspections, some airline pilots are pushing back. Much of the criticism is directed at the Transportation Security Administration.
"I would say that pilots are beyond fed up," said Tom Walsh, a pilot and sometimes aviation security consultant. "The TSA is wasting valuable time and money searching the crew - who are not a threat."
Even one of the nation's most celebrated pilots, Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, has detected the growing unease.
"The fundamental reason is that airline pilots are already the last line of defense for anyone who poses a threat to the airplane," said the soft-spoken Sullenberger, who successfully ditched his US Airways plane in the Hudson River last year after it struck birds during takeoff. "We are - and would like to be considered - trusted partners in that important security mission."
The scanners show a body's contours on a computer stationed in a private room removed from the security checkpoints. A person's face is never shown and the person's identity is supposedly not known to the screener reviewing the images. Under TSA rules, those who decline must submit to pat-downs that include checks of the inside of travelers' thighs and buttocks.
Top federal officials said Monday that the procedures are safe and necessary sacrifices to ward off terror attacks."
Flight attendants are in fact the last line of defense--the cockpit door is locked!!  And yet, they are ALL subjected to this constant humiliation of these body scanners and pat downs--talk about un-American!!

Naked in the Airport

Unbelievable--the new rules of TSA designed as a knee jerk reaction to the underwear bomber are ridiculous and intrusive.  TSA needs to take another look at other more creative ways to keep our aircraft safe from terrorists.  There should be a system that allows us to have a background check and a biometric identification system that allows us to pass through at airports without someone observing our naked bodies or doing a pat down that feels like a sexual assault.  I don't want some stranger touching my private areas.  I can't believe that the American public is okay with this kind of invasion of our personal space.  I think I will choose to drive until this policy is changed.
